Manager of Medical Coding


Summary


We are seeking a leader and certified coder with expert knowledge of professional coding (CPT-4, HCC, and ICD-10-CM) to manage a team of remote coders responsible for TogetherCare Epic coder work queues. St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates. P.C. (a member of Trinity Health), is the leading provider of healthcare in the NYS Capital Region with over 900 billing providers.


We are looking for a candidate with strong Interpersonal skills include verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to handle conflict, teamwork, empathy, listening, and a positive attitude with kindness. Being flexible and positive, able to listen, and communicating well are important criteria for this remote position. Strong analytical/ critical thinking skills; detail oriented; proficiency with computers (Epic experience preferred); and the ability to multi-task are critical. The position reports to the SPHPMA Director of Compliance and will work closely with the Compliance team.


The Manager of Coding is responsible for the centralized oversight of SPHPMA professional coding. The incumbent will perform all job functions in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the mission and goals of St Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates.


Skills


Expert knowledge of billing, reimbursement, CPT-4 and ICD-10-CM coding; strong written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical/critical thinking skills; detail oriented; proficiency with computers; multi-tasking skills required.


Job Duties and Responsibilities




  • Oversight of all SPHPMA professional services coding staff to ensure the accurate and optimal coding of medical records utilizing ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 Procedure Codes, the use of Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits and the 3M software tool as well as payer and industry standards.




  • Oversight of all internal coding training throughout SPHPMA, including coders imbedded in practice offices.




  • Develops and implements systems/methodologies to monitor the quality and effectiveness of coding practices in support of the SPHPMA Compliance Plan.




  • Is responsible for managing coder work queues ensuring balanced coder responsibilities and monitoring Epic coding dashboards.




  • Is responsible for periodic assessment, monitoring and auditing of quality and accuracy of all coder’s work.




  • Develops coder skills, sets task completion expectations and assigns coders to code specific specialty areas of expertise.




  • Collaborates with Revenue Integrity to recommend and implement changes to ensure documentation integrity and optimal reimbursement for services.




  • Collaborates with relevant committees and EPFS on denial prevention.




  • Participates in Trinity-wide work groups, training, and other efforts to address appropriate coding and documentation.




  • Maintains an awareness of laws and regulations, keeping abreast of current changes that may affect health care systems through personal initiative, seminars, training programs and peer contact.




  • Participates in and/or provides guidance in developing analytics for tracking and trending ensuring a proactive approach to identifying and correcting coding deficiencies.




  • Maintains professional certified coder status (CPC or CCS).




  • Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA/Privacy and Security regulations as appropriate.

Qualifications




  • Certified Professional Coder (AAPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA)




  • Hierarchical Condition Coding (HCC) experience preferred




  • Member American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)




  • Demonstrated coding / compliance experience (10+ years)




  • 10+year work experience may be substituted for a college degree (bachelors and/or masters)




  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Teams




  • Excellent attention to detail and organization




  • Commitment to confidentiality and respect




  • Solid judgement to escalate issues appropriately




  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
