Position Summary:

The Third Assistant Engineer oversees the operation of propulsion and power generation systems and stands an engineering watch when assigned as a watch stander.



Responsibilities / Job Duties:

• The Third Assistant Engineer oversee the safe operation of the vessel including propulsion, power generation, and steering systems when standing an Engine watch. The Assistant Engineer may be referred to as the Engine Watch Officer within various procedures.


• The Third Assistant Engineer reports directly to the First Assistant Engineer and Chief Engineer and implements SMS requirements and additional duties as assigned.


• The Third Assistant Engineer is responsible for standing all assigned watches and assisting the Chief Engineer and First Engineer with the inspection, testing and maintenance for vessel systems and machinery.


• The Third Assistant Engineer may be referred to as the Engine Watch Officer within various procedures.

Requirements/Qualifications:

• Familiarity with Wartsila, EMD, and CAT engines


• All Required National Endorsements and International STCW endorsements for a chemical tanker capable of foreign voyages


• USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages. Note: Submit a copy of your current MMC with your online application.


• International STCW Endorsements: Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW III/1), Medical First Aid Provider (STCW A-VI/4-1), Able Seafarer-Engine (STCW III/5), RFPEW (STCW III/4), STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW VI/1), PSC (STCW VI/2), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6)


• National Endorsements: Engineering Officer (3rd Assistant Engineer of Motor Propelled Vessels Unlimited Horsepower, QMED-Any Rating, Lifeboatman, Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Steward’s Department (F.H.)


• Tankerman Assistant limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) Cargoes PIC endorsement is preferred


• Submit a copy of current USCG/STCW medical certificate, renewed every 2 years with your online application


• Submit copies of current valid TWIC card and Passport with your online application


• For safety reasons, a COVID vaccination is required subject to the reasonable accommodation provisions of the ADA and Title VII

Education/Experience:

• High School diploma


• Maritime Academy graduate preferred


• Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

• Ability as required by the U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certification (Form CG-719K). Able to work, lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds, climbing and descending ladders.
