We are seeking an Associate Staff Engineer for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) will be



responsible for operation, training (including safety) support, purchasing and maintenance of equipment



within the department.



Specific Duties & Responsibilities



Laboratory Management



Provide technical expertise for use of departmental equipment, including installation, operation, training, and maintenance including, but not limited to

Mechanical testing and processing, such as hardness testing, tension/compression.

testing, polishing, mounting press, rolling mill, saws, and furnaces.

Thermal Analysis with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric.

Analysis (TGA).

Rheology.

UV/VIS spectroscopy.

Optical Microscopy.

Other sample preparation and processing such as plasma cleaner and ultracentrifuge and other equipment that may be acquired.

Serve as department safety officer to ensure safe practices in the laboratories and compliance with all applicable university, federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations.

Perform regular safety inspections.

Train in the use of instruments and create instrument operating procedures

Provide technical expertise for the design of experiments and tests.

Establish a system for managing backing up information technology associated with laboratory equipment

Decommissioning of equipment for all department related labs.

Assist with technical, lab facility, and instrumentation issues and repairs, including departmental and investigator equipment, coordinating with the Facilities department and outside vendors, as needed and other duties and responsibilities as needed for the laboratory management of the department.



Financial Management



Procure goods and services necessary for operation of the department instruments and laboratories.

Coordinate and schedule equipment services (e.g. installation, repair, purchase).

Evaluate and order consumable supplies for laboratory and instrumentation use.

Perform inventory management for the department and manage inventory lists for the department.

With collaboration with the teaching faculty, DMSE equipment committee, and administrative manager, plan for future equipment needs

Other duties and responsibilities as needed for the financial management of the labs of the department.



Education



Assist department faculty in the instruction of students in Laboratory course within DMSE;

Prepare specimens for testing and help oversee student experiments (design, procedures, modifications, and characterization).

Assist with undergraduate laboratory courses by training teaching assistants and ensuring availability and operability of lab equipment.

Prepare samples for undergraduate laboratory courses.

Train graduate students on safety related issues and incident response.

Maintain instrument training and operating procedures.

Evaluate laboratory exercises and recommend modifications/additions for continuous

improvement.



Internal & External Contacts



Actively work with head of the department, faculty and administrators to identify instrument and equipment needs for department. Actively work with faculty, staff and students to train, troubleshoot and assist with equipment use in both classroom settings and one-on-one settings. Actively work with faculty members, department administrator and purchasing department to advise, consult and negotiate major equipment purchases for the department.

Participate, advise and consult in campus safety committee and laboratory coordinator meetings and activities.

Evaluate service contracts and arrange for instrumentation service from external vendors. Arrange and host meetings with instrumentation supplies to evaluate new technologies and characterization techniques.

Interface and consult with Health Safety & Environment. Interface with university Facilities and Maintenance, Fixed Assets and others as needed.



Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



Expertise in operating in instrumentation, including several of the aforementioned instruments.

Expertise in managing the repair of instrumentation, including several of the aforementioned instruments and working with vendors.

Expertise in presenting to groups of people.

Project management experience.

Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Basic understanding of budgeting and funds management.

Proficiency with office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office)



Minimum Qualifications



Requires a Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering.



Preferred Qualifications



Master's Degree preferred.

Experience operating and maintaining scientific equipment.

Experience training in the use of scientific equipment.

Starting Salary Range: $54,080-$74,390 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
