Staff Software Engineer, SFS Bank Platform

We opened in March 2021 and provide lending and FDIC insured deposits services to small businesses on a nationwide basis. Job Description

The SFS Bank Platform team enables the bank with modern tooling and high-quality services. We're Square's gateway to the Federal Reserve, trusted partners to our Finance and Treasury team, and we create new capabilities for the bank to unlock opportunities across the entire Block ecosystem.

You Will:

• Lead your engineering teammates through design and implementation of high-scale software as we add new capabilities to our banking platform

• Closely collaborate with product managers, engineers, and other partners to ensure we’re building the right solutions to the most important problems

• Build systems that operate on our customers' most sensitive data, while holding SFS to the highest standards for security and compliance.

• Ensure the continued operation of our critical services through proactive planning, responsive remediation, and continuous improvement of systems and processes

• Make the engineers who work with you better through teaching, collaboration, and mentorship

Qualifications

You have:

• 8 or more years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's Degree

• Experience designing, building, and operating high-availability, high-scale distributed systems

• Hands-on skills building software products or services in the cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.)

• A strong sense of customer empathy and a drive to ship software that improves their lives

• A track record of building software that is easy to observe and operate

• A passion both for building things yourself and helping your fellow engineers to succeed

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This is a remote-forward team.

Even better, but not required:

• Proficiency building products and services using AWS

• Proficiency with Go

• Experience building a modern system from scratch or modernizing a complex, existing system

• Experience building public APIs

• Experience with serverless architecture

• Experience building tools for finance operations

Technologies we use and teach:

• Go, Kotlin/Java, Ruby, Terraform

• TypeScript, React, PhantomJS

• AWS Lambda, Fargate, ECS, and Step Functions

• AWS Athena, AWS OpenSearch (or ElasticSearch)

• Swagger, Protocol Buffers, gRPC, REST

• Unit Tests, Continuous Integration, and other methods of quality assurance

Our engineering team is distributed across the United States (San Francisco, Seattle, New York), and many of our colleagues are based out of the SFS headquarters in Salt Lake City. Block also has engineering offices in Austin, Atlanta, and St. Louis.
