Senior Mechanical Engineer
Company: Oakland Automation
Job Type: Salary, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Expected Travel: Expect 1-2 site visits to customers per month, typically 1-3 days of travel per trip.
PURPOSE
Senior Mechanical Engineers are responsible for completing all mechanical engineering deliverables for assigned projects. Senior engineers will review specifications and complete a system design that satisfies all requirements. Once a viable system design is completed and approved, senior engineers will work with other engineers and designers to detail and release a complete engineering package for build, testing, and installation of the system.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive a partial concept from sales, review customer specifications, and proceed, with limited oversight, to complete a fully engineered solution that meets the budget, schedule, and specifications of the project.
- Complete mechanical engineering and system design needs culminating with the release of a drawing and detail package that allows the system to be successfully purchased, built, and installed.
- Support projects until completion, including on site commissioning of equipment during manufacturing plant scheduled shutdowns.
- Initiate and lead customer interactions to clarify uncertainties and ensure timely completion of engineering deliverables.
- Support technical selling process by participating in customer meetings to help identify manufacturing process layouts and solutions to customer problems.
- Preferred candidates will have experience with piping system design including sizing and routing of piping, valve selection and configuration, pump sizing and selection, and system design to achieve desired pressures and/or flow rates.
- Preferred candidates will have experience with structural steel design to support dynamic loading, e.g., robotic motion.
- Receive and interpret 2D and 3D mechanical drawings related to various customers processes.
- Participate in reviewing and releasing final engineering drawings to the manufacturing department
- Participate in reviewing and releasing an accurate bill of material (BOM) for designed/engineered equipment.
- Ensures the equipment being started up and commissioned operates in accordance with the approved customer specifications.
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to develop and provide equipment installation instructions with are compliant with site installation requirements.
- Develop equipment specifications that allow outside vendors to quote and supply equipment and ensure the selected suppliers follow Oakland Automation processes and meet project quality and delivery expectations.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safe work practices while on work premises, both internal and at customer sites.
- Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical Engineering or other closely related engineering discipline or equivalent experience
- 5 years of on-the-job design and engineering experience related to custom machinery and/or capital equipment.
- 5 years of on-the-job experience with Inventor and/or Solidworks, AutoCAD, or other comparable CAD design software.
- Ability to demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines without endangering the integrity of the equipment or compromising safety requirements.
- Ability to interact professionally with customers and suppliers while maintaining a positive working relationship.
- Ability to work onsite within the Oakland Automation offices or at customer locations as required.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged time spent sitting at a desk and working on the computer.
- Prolonged time spent standing and moving around a customer manufacturing facility including traversing stairs.
