Medical Coder

Under supervision of the Lakeshore ENT Coding Committee, provides ongoing coding education to Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Abstracts pertinent information from patient records. Assigns the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes.

• Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies or opportunities to ensure that claims are coded appropriately. Reviews claims for accuracy, including proper diagnosis, procedure codes, and modifiers.

• Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.

• Maintains knowledge of and complies with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.

• Conducts chart audits and internal coding reviews and provides education as appropriate.

• Prepares insurance claims for submission to third party payers and/or responsible parties.

• Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.

• Keeps abreast of and complies with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.

• Other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Experience:

• Medical billing & coding: 2 years (Preferred)
• Customer service: 1 year (Preferred)
• Working in a medical office: 1 year (Preferred)
