Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the medical biller / coder specialist is to calculate and collect payments for medical procedures and services. They are responsible for submitting medical claims timely to insurance companies and payers. Their work includes updating patient data, developing payment plans and preparing invoices. They are required to make sure patients are billed quickly and accurately.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • charge coding and posting
  • Posting insurance payments
  • Working A/R for both patient/ insurance
  • Processing insurance refunds
  • Answering Billing Office phone calls
  • Deposit and updating transactions one afternoon each week that will include send and receive electronic claims

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma
  • Medical billing certification preferred (CPC Preferred)
  • Knowledge of business and accounting process usually obtained form an associate degree, with a degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Health Care Administration preferred
  • A minimum of one to three years of experience in a medical setting
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines including HMO/PPO, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements and system
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 Coding
