This is a full-time position.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field 
Required Experience:
  • Five (5) years of full-time experience in law enforcement, with preference for a wide variety of police experience including but not limited to uniform patrol, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, police tactics, policy development, budgeting, strategic planning, emergency management and incident command in urban and/or diverse suburban or College setting.
Required Certifications/Licenses:  
  • Police Officer Standards and Training Certification (POST “A”) required.
Substitution(s):
  • Associate’s degree accepted with two (2) additional years of the required experience
  • Master’s degree will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Four (4) additional years of the required experience will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Education:
  • Master's degree in any field 
Preferred Experience:
  • 10+ years of supervisory law enforcement experience at increasing levels of responsibility beyond mere first-line supervisor (i.e., Commander, Captain, Lieutenant, etc.) preferably at an institution of higher learning or city or state police departments.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses:
  • Basic and Executive Training Law Enforcement certifications must be obtained within 90 days of hire, if not already possessed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:  
  • Must be qualified to carry a weapon and maintain the qualification to carry a firearm.
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with faculty/staff, administration students, and visitors of the College
  • Ability to appropriately identify problems and solutions, then execute the solution to resolve the problem.
  • Ability to strategize, plan, organize, and carry out related projects that has being assigned to the Chief of Police and the Public Safety Department.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Computer skills and use of technology skills sufficient to operate a personal computer to access e-mail, electronic calendars, and other basic software.
  • Highly effective oral, written, and organizational skills and ability to perform responsibilities in an accurate and timely fashion with little supervision.
  • Knowledge of annual reporting to ensure accurate and timely documentation, and compliance with applicable laws, polices, and procedures, i.e., Clery Act.
  • Knowledge of Title IX regulations.  
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to demonstrate how to handle diverse situations and a diverse population of people utilizing best practices.
  • Knowledge of first aid procedures.
  • Must possess physical, visual, and hearing capabilities sufficient to fully perform law enforcement duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain contacts with city, parish, state, and federal law enforcement personnel.
  • Ability to understand, establish and maintain positive working relations with diverse groups including faculty, students, administrators, supervisors, support staff, and outside organization.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:  
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise employees in a multi-campus college setting.

The Assistant Chief of Police supports the Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) Police Department in all aspects of Campus Safety.  The Assistant Chief of Police works directly under the Chief of Police and is responsible for managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Police Department including law enforcement, crime prevention and crime suppression programs; coordinates assigned activities with other internal departments and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and multi-complex leadership and administrative support.

Manages and directs the operation of the police department. Assists with directing and coordinating the College security, safety and protection programs to include patrolling of physical property, enforcement of statues and College regulations, investigations of accidents and criminal acts.  Directs the application of of advanced and innovate concepts and best practice in campus allow enforcement to achieve objectives and continuously improves performance. Sustains and advances the Department's mission in support of the College's mission through the use of community policing and their best practice in campus law enforcement. Direct supervision of shift officers, training, teaching, and police investigations.  This includes interviewing, making recommendations for hiring, disciplinary actions, career development, performance evaluations and monitoring and scheduling of officers to include overtime.

Controls and commands law enforcement operations of investigations, emergency management situations, and special College events. Coordinates with and provides complex administrative support to the Chief of Police. Provides assistance to the Chief in development, administration, coordination and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and activities.  The Assistant Chief police will also assist the Chief of Police with overseeing the parking operations of the College. Provides staff assistance to assigned supervisory staff; provide various program and activity reports; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence; makes recommendation for the addition of new programs.  Please note: The Assistant Chief of Police is expected to be present and available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and natural disasters

Estimates funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies, and assist in directing the monitoring and approval of expenditures. Assists with developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the department and work units. Reviews and directs the department's fiscal, equipment, and human resources activities and services; develops reviews and manages staff and employee recruitment; development and training. Oversees the development and implementation of policies, procedures and plan related to departmental services and operation.

In the absence of the Chief of Police, assumes command of the Police Department.

Serves as liaison with city, state and federal law enforcement community and emergency response agencies.  Attends conference and training to keep abreast of current trends in the field.
