Exponent s evaluates implant materials, medical devices and performs assessments utilizing experimental, imaging, and finite element techniques. These evaluations are done during the device development or as part of failure analyses or scientific marketing efforts once the devices are already in the market. We are equipped with state-of-the art laboratories and test facilities to perform these evaluations as well as a Biomedical research library containing thousands of research articles. Exponent s unique combination of expertise enables the Biomedical Practice to research and analyze the complex mechanical interactions between humans and medical devices. We also consult in intellectual property and product liability matters related to medical devices.
The Biomedical Engineering Practice is looking for Engineering Assistant Co-Ops for the Fall/Winter 2022 co-op cycle.
Exponent s co-op opportunities typically include responsibilities in retrieval analysis, mechanical testing, wear testing, and laboratory operations. The devices analyzed in the lab have historically been concentrated on orthopedic and spinal products. However, opportunities to work on cardiovascular, drug delivery, and tissue-based products have become more typical.
This position requires a strong problem solving and troubleshooting mindset. The ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities is incredibly important, as well as effective written and verbal communication skills.

- Retrieval analysis includes analyzing explanted devices according to ISO and ASTM standards. Responsibilities include maintaining databases of device related information, decontaminating devices, and conducting analysis using equipment such as digital microscopes, FTIR, MicroCT, white light interferometry, load frames, etc.
- Mechanical testing includes conducting various mechanical tests according to ASTM and ISO standards on medical devices and materials. Principles of mechanical testing are also applied more generally to consumer products, sports equipment, and other products and materials. Responsibilities include assisting with method translation and development, executing protocols, and processing mechanical testing data. Additional requirements include maintenance of regular safety checks of the labs, waste pick-up coordination, and assisting with MRI testing.
- Wear testing involves conducting tests on medical devices to measure the amount and type of wear induced under ASTM and ISO standards. These tests typically take weeks and months to execute and the co-op is responsible for conducting each interval of the test, including cleaning, desiccating, weighing, and photographing each component. Additionally, the analysis includes MicroCT scanning, WLI, and Talyrond measurements.
