The MSU IT Research Cyberinfrastructure department supports campus in the creation and delivery of high impact technology strategies and services in support of the university research community and their global research initiatives.



Under the administration of the Executive Vice President for Administration and Chief Information Officer, the Executive Director for Research Cyberinfrastructure will serve as a principal advisor to departmental, as well as University, leadership in the area of research cyberinfrastructure services and initiatives. Responsibilities will involve leading and contributing to the vision, strategic direction, technical landscape, governance and influence necessary to execute enterprise-wide research technology initiatives; implementing best practices and developing an engaged, accountable, and high-performing workforce; and acting as a champion for the effective and efficient use of university resources. Specific duties will include:



  • Leading the collaboration with campus units and other teams across MSU in enhancing MSU's research environments (built and virtual), software development, and research administration technology services.

  • Maintaining and cultivating relationships with key clients and stakeholders, such as academic leaders, faculty, staff, and students and research primary investigators, in order to provide direction and escalation.

  • Leading managers to work with key stakeholders to plan and execute projects, ensures that teams have appropriate specifications, direction, and resources to deliver services effectively.

  • Responsibility for Research Cyberinfrastructure services and operations ensuring a highly reliable, secure and efficient and effective landscape for the university research community.

  • Directing the facilitation and coordination of relevant University service providers to provide a high-quality experience for the university research community.

  • Providing strategic leadership for new enterprise research support systems and platforms in information technology, to better position the university relative to emerging trends in higher education.

  • Collaborating with IT peers and partners to deliver centralized technology solutions to support the diverse current and future needs of university research stakeholders.

  • Directing initiatives to improve operational efficiency and service delivery effectiveness across all lines of business and technology platforms.

  • Responsibility for the department funding associated with projects, ensuring they deliver on time and within budget, and that projects under their leadership deliver intended value to the enterprise.

  • Directing managers and staff to establish project estimates and timelines for established budgets.

  • Recruiting and retaining top level talent for the Research Cyberinfrastructure Services department.

  • Monitoring and mentoring individual direct report employee performance and engagement.

Required Degree



Bachelors



Minimum Requirements



Bachelor’s degree; more than eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a leadership role influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders on research and scholarly activities; experience in managing the development and delivery of higher education cyberinfrastructure environments to deliver highly available and secure research services; experience with managing and directing product management of on-premise, cloud-based, web and mobile application research solutions; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Desired Qualifications



Excellent communication skills; verbal, written and interpersonal.





Multi-year experience in managing/supervising research or academic technology teams and services.





Experience in the higher-education industry, particularly in research or scholarly information technology services.
