About Information Technology

The Institution's Department of Information Technology is responsible for advancing the mobilization of technology solutions organization-wide to meet strategic goals while supporting day-to-day technology requirements.  Information Technology has a small team of experienced technicians who support software and hardware systems for numerous services, departments, and programs including sales systems, video processing, and ticketing systems.  Information Technology integrates applications to create a technology ecosystem that enable the Institution to expand its mission and deliver on goals and objectives.

Summary

The Web Developer will work with other developers to design, code, test, and analyze web programs of a broad nature related to ticketing, finance, video processing, server automation, data processing, and eCommerce among others. This includes researching, designing, documenting, and modifying application specifications throughout the production lifecycle. The web developer will also monitor and address software errors in a timely and accurate fashion and provide status reports where required. This incumbent will work on web programs that serve both internal users and patrons as well as assist in connecting or extending existing software applications. 

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Assist developers, analysts, and designers in conceptualizing and developing new programs and applications.
  • Plan phases of the software development for a variety of projects.
  • Assist in the preparation and documentation of application requirements and specifications.
  • Research and document requirements of application users.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Conduct research on emerging web development software products, languages, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements and upgrades.

Operational Management

  • Consistently write, translate, and code web applications according to specifications.
  • Run and monitor performance tests on new and existing programs to correct errors, isolating areas for improvement and general debugging.
  • Administer critical analysis of test results and deliver solutions to problem areas.
  • Generate reports for management and/or team members on the status of the programming process.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of user manuals and guidelines.
  • Install software products and provide guidance and support for end-users as required.
  • Write programming scripts to enhance functionality and/or appearance of company website/applications.
  • Remove code script from company website/applications as necessary.
  • Liaise with network administrators, systems analysts, and software engineers to assist in resolving problems with software products or company software systems.

Education and Experience

Required education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or related field. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education/work experience will also be considered.

Required professional experience: Minimum 3-years of professional experience as a web developer is strongly preferred.  Candidates who are recent graduates of a bachelor's program with an equivalent combination of education/experience through a formal internship program may also be considered.

Required technical experience:  Functional knowledge of programming languages, such as Python and JavaScript.  Proven technical savvy with HTML and CSS.  Demonstrated technical capabilities working in frameworks such as JavaScript (like Vue.js and React) and MVC (Django and Laravel), version management programs (Git), basic server administration programs (Linux), relational databases (SQL), and internet/web browser technologies (REST and OAuth).

  • Logic and reasoning to understand theories, principles, and practices related to technology and to use this knowledge to support strategies, implement and deploy new technology solutions, and ensure healthy operations organization-wide through writing/coding, testing, and performing critical analysis on programs.  
  • Analytical thinking to identify complex technical issues, use critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and relevant information to evaluate options, and develop appropriate, effective solutions.
  • Project management experience to navigate multiple projects, full cycle, simultaneously with the further capacity to learn, provide end-user support and training, and develop processes, procedures, and resources.
  • Relationship-building expertise to provide functional and professional support across interworking groups. A consultative and collaborative approach to communication/listening and problem-resolution in teams.
  • Balanced self-starter and team player focused on work that builds a foundation of process and procedure, accomplishes routine responsibilities, plans for the future, and meets deadlines and goals.

Work Location, Schedule, and Travel

This position will be based in Chautauqua Institution's home office, located in Southwestern New York State.  The Web Developer will work a full-time schedule (35-45 hours/week) that may include daytime and evening hours, weekdays, and weekends, especially in the busy summer operating season at Chautauqua Institution.  Qualified candidates will be considered for telework.
