We are looking for a staff II software engineer who loves to code and is ready to lead a major technology roadmap based on standards-based access control.

You will work on the Authentication and Authorization platform that secures VMware s products. You will build and extend the first companywide IAM platform and create a unified and consistent experience for our customers. This role isn t about using AuthN and AuthZ technologies it s about building them.

What is the primary need and/or problem you will be addressing?

Authentication is the first step in every product use case. Authorization is the second. The table stakes challenge is to make sure these core services work every time and stay secure. Your challenge and opportunity is to simplify the usage and management of the platform as integration and hybrid-cloud complexity increases.

This is an exciting time to join the team because you ll be building our next generation services. You ll use OAuth2/OIDC to unify authentication across VMware. You ll use technologies like SPIFFE / SPIRE to manage service-to-service auth lifecycle. You ll also create new solutions to deploy and manage these core technologies. These solutions will combine to create our IAM platform.

Your goals for the first 3 6 months

  • You are familiar with the team s technical domain, understand and are contributing to the long-term roadmap, and can troubleshoot and fix problems at depth in multiple areas
  • You have designed and are leading a small team to implement one or more shipping roadmap features
  • You are raising the bar on team DevOps and SaaS culture
  • You have collaborative relationships with peers in other teams we work with across the company
  • You re having fun and have found a balance that makes you excited to take on the next challenges

Requirements for the role and a sample of your regular work

Your skills:

  • 8+ years of strong development experience in Java. Comfortable in C++ and curious about Go
  • Success defining, leading and implementing a major feature or service with multiple engineers and cross team coordination.
  • Development experience in Unix/Linux platforms in a CI/CD environment
  • Experience with access control technologies including SCIM, OAuth2/OIDC, JTW, Active Directory, and SAML
  • Distributed systems programming
  • Team player, with the willingness to work with distributed teams (VMware has teams all over the globe)
  • Outstanding attitude and energy with excellent communication skills
  • Master s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent job experience.

Your work:

  • Become an expert in AuthN and AuthZ related security
  • Create architecture and design specs that support agile, iterative delivery of our roadmap
  • Deliver and demo every sprint
  • Own DevOps for one or more components and drive continuous improvements in key measurements
  • Collaborate and work as peers. If something seems wrong, speak up. If something is needed, help solve the problem
