Job Description:


Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Academic Services and Learning Resources (ASLR), the Associate Director of ASLR is responsible for supporting services and programs that promote student academic success. The Associate Director will work individually with students and will create and facilitate academic skill-building workshops. In addition to general academic support work, the Associate Director is responsible for the coordinating Passport and The Mentor Program.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Provide academic support for students:
  • Meet individually with students; assist students in developing effective skills and habits (e.g., time management, test preparation, reading strategies)
  • Provide academic counseling and academic support
  • Develop and facilitate academic skill-building workshops to help students achieve academic success
  • Assist students in clarifying their academic (major, minor, etc.) and co-curricular interests (study abroad, academic internships, etc.); connect to relevant campus resources and partners
  • Serve as a first-year advisor as a part of the First-Year Advising program
  • Monitor and engage in regular follow-up with students about their progress
  • Teach skills necessary for academic success using compassion and sensitivity to diverse needs

Coordinate recruitment, orientation, and programming for Passport:
  • Coordinate faculty, staff, and student participation in Passport through the summer as well as the academic and co-curricular components during the academic year.
  • Work collaboratively with Admissions to recruit students to Passport (e.g., mailings, phone calls, presentations to admitted students)
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of the Center for Writing to hire, train, and supervise student staff
  • Plan and facilitate programming (e.g., workshops, social events) during academic year
  • Coordinate and organize Passport spring retreat
  • Supervise the Academic Services and Learning Resources Passport Program Coordinator

Co-direct The Mentor Program:
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Multicultural Education to recruit, hire, and train peer mentors and peer mentor assistant
  • Assign mentees to peer mentors
  • Meet regularly with peer mentors and peer mentor assistant to support and supervise their work
  • Plan and facilitate events to bring peer mentors and mentees together as a group
  • Report weekly payroll
  • Provide academic support to mentees

Serve as back up to the ASLR Director to manage the regular business of the department (as needed):
  • Approve staff and student payroll
  • Authorize budget expenditures
  • Oversee progress on departmental priorities
  • Other duties as assigned



Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree required; 2-3 years' experience in academic support, advising, or student program development at the college level strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing, celebrating and engaging diversity and belonging
  • Specific Experiences that are desirable: working with college students to develop academic skills; creating and facilitating academic support workshops; coordinating orientation and transition programs; supporting the success of first-year students from historically marginalized backgrounds
  • Specific Skills that are desirable: proven ability to coordinate and prioritize details for multiple programs; demonstrated ability to communicate well, orally and in writing, with different constituencies (e.g., parents, students, staff, academic administrators)
