What To Expect
The Battery Engineering Team is seeking a highly-motived Materials Engineering Technician to help develop the next generation of High Voltage Batteries, while relentlessly improving our existing products. Our design requirements push the limits of physical possibility, which requires you to be extremely detail oriented and to hold your work to the highest standards. Our team drives collaboration with many engineering groups, requiring a team player mentality. Tesla moves quickly, so being self-motivated and disciplined is critical. You must be passionate, but direction changes quickly, so you must also be resilient. Our small team makes the batteries for all our Electric Vehicles and Energy Storage Products.
What You ll Do
The Battery Engineering Team is seeking a highly-motived Materials Engineering Technician to help develop the next generation of High Voltage Batteries, while relentlessly improving our existing products. What You ll Do
- Prepare critical test fixtures and samples for materials characterization - mechanical, thermal, and electrical testing (coupons, tensile and lap shear bars, dielectric tests, burn rate tests)
- Assist in building engineering prototypes of new battery designs focused on the adhesives, potting, and encapsulating aspects
- Operate and maintain adhesive dispense equipment, both bench scale and pilot scale
- Assist in process development for adhesive and encapsulate dispense for new battery module designs including sourcing equipment and parts
- Operate and program robot dispense gantry
- Instrument and test engineering prototypes, including data acquisition and processing
- Assist in root cause failed modules from field returns and validation testing, including methodical tear downs and inspections
- Provide careful, detail-oriented documentation during builds, tests, and inspections
- Maintain high standard of housekeeping, safety and organization in our lab
- Travel to support product launches at our factories in Fremont, Reno, and Austin, and potentially Berlin and Shanghai.
- Preferred: Associate s Degree, with extensive practical experience as lab technician and equipment technician (5+ years)
- Preferred: Experience with handling adhesives, resins, and chemicals, such as molding, casting, composite building, or related
- Basic mechanical fabrication skills, machine shop and power tool experience
- Experience with metrology and data acquisition
- Methodical and diligent, works with a strong sense of quality and craft
- Creative approach to problem solving, with willingness to learn and try new things
- Self-directed, able to work across the entire organization to collect parts and information to execute job responsibilities
- Excellent documentation and written communication; proficient using Microsoft Office
