Job Title: Development Director
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Summary: The Development Director is responsible for all fundraising and development activities to support The Arc of Loudoun's students, clients, and families, along with our volunteers, supporters, and the community at large. The Development Director serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting The Arc of Loudoun. The successful candidate will forge new relationships to build The Arc of Loudoun's visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Development Director also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for creating and maintaining key external alliances by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Development Director will closely collaborate with The Arc's Marketing and Communications team to expand the relationships with our organization's stakeholders, including people with disabilities and their families, volunteers, donors, self-advocates, staff, and the Loudoun County/Greater Washington DC community. The Development Director will oversee all organizational fundraising events.

The successful candidate is a seasoned Development Professional with strong fundraising skills and demonstrated experience in building long-term strategic relationships. The Development Director will lead the organization in achieving fundraising goals that reflect and support The Arc of Loudoun's strategic growth.

Job Responsibilities

The Development Director will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow The Arc of Loudoun's budget through major gifts, grants, annual giving, membership, special events, and corporate and foundation support. S/he/they will expand and diversify The Arc's donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Development Director will work closely with the Board of Directors and Development Committee members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

Identify and vet grant opportunities, write and submit grant proposals, communicate directly with Grantors, and provide all required reports and follow-up.
Manage The Arc's Social Solutions/Apricot CSM tool, ensuring that accurate data is collected, and that correct, comprehensive reports are generated as needed for grantors.
Create, coordinate, and direct all fundraising initiatives, including direct mail solicitations (paper and electronic), events, etc.
Manage The Arc's Network for Good account; provide timely thank you responses to donors for all donations made to The Arc.
Foster a culture of philanthropy within The Arc of Loudoun by training a cadre of "Arc Ambassadors" comprised of Board members, clients, and volunteers.
Assure that the corporate culture, systems, and procedures support fund development and vice versa.
Lead staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization.
Assure development and maintenance of appropriate systems to fund development including, but not limited to, volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition.
Maintain accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
Lead fundraising and development efforts to research, identify, cultivate, and steward relationships leading to financial, budget-relieving investment in the organization through major donors, individual donors, special event sponsorships, corporations and foundations.

Representation in the Community

The Development Director will organize and lead The Arc's representation at community events, CFC/United Way engagements, and other groups with whom we collaborate to help spread awareness and communicate the initiatives of The Arc of Loudoun. The Development Director will lead the "Arc Ambassadors", a select group of people specifically trained by the Development Director to officially represent our organization and speak on our behalf.

Event and Volunteer Management

The Development Director will actively participate in event creation, planning, management, and logistics for The Arc of Loudoun fundraising events, including collaborating with the Marketing and Communications team, administrative support, volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, and onsite, day-of support.

Essential Experience / Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the creation, design, and execution of high-dollar ($500,000+ net) fundraising events and related initiatives.
Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational development skills
Demonstrated successful experience identifying previously untapped grant opportunities and submitting winning proposals.
Experience with configuring and maintaining Network for Good and Social Solutions-Apricot case management applications required.
Management of the day-to-day operations of the development function; setting goals and monitoring progress and completion / win rate.
Creating and implementing new processes to execute a comprehensive and fully integrated development program with a focus on increasing sustainable giving, major gifts, and corporate support/sponsorship.
Growing major gifts including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors defined as donating $50,000+ in a year.
Management of all aspects of direct-mail fundraising campaign(s).
Creating, implementing, and managing a membership program for The Arc of Loudoun.
Establish and execute a planned giving program, to include working with the Marketing and Communications team to advertise the program.
Manage The Arc's United Way and Combined Federal Campaigns
Maintain and improve upon the gift recognition and acknowledgement process.
Commitment to working collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Strong oral and written communications skills and exceptional attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
A true collaborator who interacts seamlessly with staff, community members, volunteers, management, and the constituents that we serve.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills with the ability to develop donor briefings and communicate with diverse personalities in a tactful, professional, and positive manner; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
Utilize a strategic approach to fundraising and possess a strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and current and emerging fundraising technology and approaches.
Proven ability to think critically, achieve results, manage multiple tasks, adhere to deadlines, and work well under pressure both independently and as part of a team.
Innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to think beyond the traditional; strong ethical/moral compass.
Experience with and passion for working on behalf of individuals with intellectual, developmental, emotional/behavioral, and physical disabilities.
Bilingual Spanish skills preferred, but not required.

Education and Certification Requirements

5+ years of experience in direct fundraising; education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Professional Development and Training

Attend all mandatory staff meetings.
Attend trainings and professional development opportunities presented by The Arc of Loudoun, as required.
Participate in industry recognized professional development opportunities.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to remain in a stationary position frequently.
The person in this position needs to often move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment, such as copy machines and printers.
Constant oral and written communications with staff, vendors, other professional personnel, donors, etc.
Local travel to meet with donors, vendors, staff in other locations, etc.
May need to work in outdoor weather conditions as events and activities require.
Must be able to work weekends and evenings as events and activities require.
