About the Team


This group is a part of the Enterprise Strategy Office at Liberty Mutual Insurance, a Fortune 100 company with 45,000 employees in 900 offices worldwide.  Our mission is to act as a catalyst for Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled innovation across Liberty Mutual, and all of insurance, which includes driving the company’s AI Collaboration with one of the top research institutions in the world.  Liberty Mutual recognizes that AI and data science is driving the next wave of transformation in the insurance industry across the entire value chain (e.g., underwriting/risk selection, quoting/buying, customer behavior, claims fraud detection) and interdisciplinary collaboration is critical to unlocking its business and societal impact.


 


 Job Summary & Responsibilities:


You will play a key role in driving Liberty Mutual’s efforts in its AI Collaboration with a world-renowned research institution through your hands-on work with stakeholders across the enterprise (e.g., business leaders, Product, data scientists, IT) to strategically ideate, develop, and operationalize prioritized AI-enabled projects and their resulting innovations.


 


You will help source, develop, and guide innovation projects from all areas of the organization, typically in the realm of AI/emerging technologies (e.g., predictive modeling, extreme weather, synthetic datasets, cybersecurity, IoT, computer vision, NLP, fairness, bias).


 


You will support one of the group’s Directors by managing several projects, providing strategic guidance, and driving results in a fast-paced environment. You will play a key role in driving Liberty Mutual’s strategic innovation efforts and through your work, develop exceptional problem solving and client relationship skills.


 


You will own the successful end-to-end delivery of several transformational projects and act as a partner to key internal and external stakeholders (e.g., business unit leaders, data scientists, IT, distinguished academic professors/researchers). You will contribute to the growth of a high performing team. In turn, the Director will support your development and career aspirations.


 


 Responsibilities will include:



  • Acting as a critical driver of Liberty Mutual’s efforts in the Academic Collaboration; working with business partners to execute transformational opportunities to apply AI/ML and realize identified value, develop AI competitive advantages, and enrich the lives of Liberty Mutual’s customers, employees, and partners

  • Partner with the Directors, Cross-BU Strategic Innovation to lead strategic development and prioritization of project proposals, workplans, and research; bringing “One Liberty” perspective and strategic thinking to maintain the vision and goals of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

  • Driving the successful vision, strategic development, and quarterbacking of high impact/complex AI projects, with a keen eye toward shortening the path from research to value creation; partner with appropriate corporate compliance and legal counsel, as applicable

  • Supporting the group’s leadership team to ensure the program’s ongoing alignment with company strategic priorities

  • Individually and within the team, maintaining a solid understanding of ongoing business opportunities and challenges as well as potential emerging technological solutions

  • Crafting storylines and presenting complex analytical concepts and strategic findings to senior executives to move the organization to action

  • Work with business partners to identify transformational opportunities to apply data-driven AI techniques and create value, develop AI competitive advantages, and enrich the lives of Liberty Mutual’s customers, employees, and partners

  • Contributing to several critical programmatic initiatives (e.g., pipeline management, cross-BU engagement, knowledge and capability development)

  • Contributing and growing a high-performing team; motivating others and collaborating on approaches with the group’s leadership to resolve challenging situations under tight deadlines


 


The compensation for this role is dependent on level of position, experience and education.


 


Qualifications


The group is looking for a highly motivated individual with a strategic mindset, balanced with an action-oriented capability of achieving results. The candidate should have a natural passion for innovation, AI and data science applications, and the future of insurance. The candidate will ideally have a proven track record of contributing to transformational change in large corporate setting(s) and applying emerging technologies to solve business problems and deliver commercial value at scale.


 


 Ideal candidates will possess:



  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA or Master’s in a related field (e.g., Business Analytics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Engineering) from a top-tier institution preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience of some combination of client-facing strategy consulting, product management (with specialization in innovation, AI, emerging tech), corporate-level innovation, data and analytics consulting, predictive analytics, data science, machine learning, optimization; insurance industry experience a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to strategize and drive projects to completion; undeterred by challenges/obstacles and will remain motivated and apply creative thinking to overcome them

  • Credibility and presence among peers and stakeholders and adept at influencing through excellent verbal, analytical, written, and presentation/storyboarding skills

  • Skilled at applying and advising on state-of-the-art advanced analytic and quantitative tools and modeling techniques in order to derive business insights, solve complex problems, and improve decisions strategy to execution

  • Strong critical thinking skills with ability to elevate thinking and apply judgment during analysis about how components fit together and with bigger picture

  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, and proactively across a variety of stakeholders

  • Passion for applying innovation, AI, research, and emerging technologies to the commercial world; experience and/or network within the InsurTech, corporate innovation, AI/ML, and insurance communities a plus

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment with incomplete information; able to manage multiple projects/clients concurrently and balance strategic/tactical priorities to advance projects based on known information, judgment, and orchestration of diverse stakeholders

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel; strong understanding and background applying complex algorithms and logic to process data (i.e., structured, semi-structured, unstructured)

  • The role is located in Boston, MA only; working in a hybrid model (weekly blend of in-office and WFH).
