Job Description


The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Digital Telecommunications Specialist 1 for the Office of Information Technology. *** This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.*** This position will be responsible for supporting the fiber optic plant at the University including the coordination and implementation of cable installations, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, and the coordination for construction projects. This position is also responsible for assisting with the maintenance, testing, and installation of campus telecommunication devices, wireless access points, switches, and routers as well as locating and marking underground communication cables.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or closely related field; OR Associate's degree in electronics technology or closely related field and two (2) years of experience in data communications networks involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of hardware and software; OR completion of trade school or military training to the certificate level in electronics technology which included theory of communications technology and two years of experience as described above; ORan equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

This position requires lifting up to 20 to 50 pounds overhead. This position requires climbing on ladders or accessing areas in a building that would require crawling.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants with knowledge in various telecommunication systems and practices, analytical skills including the ability to solve problems and gather data using GIS Software, proven experience in fiber optics, ability to pay close attention to detail and make sound decisions using information at hand, ability to multi-task, preparing high quality products in tight deadlines, both individually and in collaborative teams, and/or strong verbal and written communication skills are encouraged to apply.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs and on-call availability for emergency response is required.

Compensation Grade

Grade 33 (Entry, Step 01 $22.83/hr - Step 05 $27.07/hr)

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
