Bond Manager I

Manages all underwriting aspects of a surety territory or field office (typically considered small in scope) or assists in managing an office considered medium or large in scope. Accountable for quality and quantity of work, personnel, performance appraisals, new business acquisition, and profit and loss results of assigned territory or office. Is a significant contributor or primary preparer of budget and business plans, including marketing, underwriting, training and administration functions. Responsible for servicing the surety needs of customers in a multi-state territory.

Responsibilities

• Manages staff and expenses within line of business to meet business objectives, with profit objective being primary. Administers and directs exempt and non-exempt staff in the office including functional assignments, hiring, training and other performance management appraisal functions.
• Delegates supervisory responsibilities as warranted, but remains accountable for ultimate management.
• Manages product line underwriters in establishing and executing marketing/ production efforts for assigned territory.
• Continually monitors quality of performance of staff by utilization of a variety of tools, including but not limited to personal observation, surveys, underwriting information, financial files communicating with customers. Identifies problems implements corrective action.
• Ultimately responsible for ensuring that new underwriters are trained and/or supported by experienced underwriters with respect to technical underwriting issues, meetings with agents, accounts , etc. Ensures underwriting staff receives assigned training as appropriate.
• Oversees evaluation and recommendation of credit levels provided to assigned customers actively participates in major underwriting decisions on assigned risks. Ensures that risks pursued provided surety credit within territory conforms to guidelines standards for credit worthiness.
• Oversees, as a resource, acquisitions of new business portfolio management. Monitors utilization and accuracy of Surety system applications for underwriting, marketing and accounting needs of assigned territory.
• Participates in the annual strategic business planning process of the field office. Coordinates monitors the implementation of annual business plan of assigned territory.
• Manages profitability, risk mitigation, growth strategies, metrics for specific accounts overall book of business.
• Hire, train, and other performance management functions, including mid-year and annual review, regular 1:1 , and coaching activities.
• Develops individual performance objectives and development plans and insures alignment with business objectives. Appraises and evaluates team and individual performance and makes compensation recommendations
• Develops business relationships through industry related organizations and other activities to gain business intelligence of local market, enhance image of the Company and promote marketing effectiveness.
• Participates in special projects, as requested.
