The Medical Coder functions as the first line management for the Coding Department and provides oversight for the coding staff and operations. This includes education to the Coders, Providers and Staff on coding and proper documentation for Ambulatory services. Responsibilities within the department include: coding, audits, project management, staff development, quality management and training.

This position is full-time, Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work our normal business hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coding of physician documentation for the purposes of risk adjustment utilizing the current ICD-10 Coding guidelines.
  • Risk adjustment data validation support.
  • Provider coding education and interdepartmental coding education support.
  • Assist with providing education on how to document appropriately at the doctors' offices
  • Review medical charts electronically using a computer
  • Abstract and code diagnosis and documentation information
  • Research and resolution of coding projects as assigned
  • Document requested information from the medical record
  • Determine valid encounters including legibility and valid signature requirements
  • Identify valid face to face encounters
  • Perform ongoing analysis of medical record charts for the appropriate coding compliance
  • Attend conference calls as necessary to provide information and/or feedback

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED (or higher)
  • 2 years of professional or outpatient coding experience
  • Coding certification to include the following: CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, CRC
  • Ability to identify and code diagnosis codes according to CMS and ICD-10 standards
  • Computer proficiency in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel (ability to create, open, edit and save)
  • Ability to work an 8 hour shift between 8:00am - 5:00pm including the flexibility to work occasional overtime per business need

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Managed Care work experience
  • Experience with HEDIS
  • Outpatient coding

Telecommuting Requirements:

  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $18.17 - $32.26. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $20.00 - $35.53.
