EXECUTIVE COUNSEL

IN-HOUSE ATTORNEY POSITION

This is a full-time, unclassified state employee position with oversight by the Executive Director that supports the Board in its mission of public protection. The Board is looking for a qualified individual with an outgoing personality who is seeking long-term employment. The Attorney position is the only professional legal position employed by the Board. It requires functioning at an independent level, without the supervision of a higher-ranking attorney. The in-house attorney will represent the agency before trial and in appellate courts and/or administrative tribunals, presiding over highly complex and high-profile litigation brought against or initiated by the Board.



Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice law in the state of Louisiana is required.
  • Experience in administrative law as a practicing attorney is preferred.
  • Experience in administrative law as a prosecuting attorney is strongly preferred.



Duties, Tasks, Knowledge Skills & Abilities:


  • The applicant should possess passion and the ability to prosecute a constitutionally protected property right within adversarial evidentiary hearings throughout the state.
  • The applicant should have knowledge and continuing study of compliance management, training, and reporting.
  • The applicant should possess knowledge and continuing study of applicable law and judicial decisions.
  • The applicant should be knowledgeable of the legislative process.
  • The applicant should be detail-oriented, with strong analytical and research skills.
  • The applicant should have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • The applicant should possess strong and persuasive verbal and written communication skills for negotiating and mediating.
  • The applicant should have good interpersonal and technical skills, including strong critical thinking skills, adequate deductive reasoning, and good problem-solving abilities.
  • The applicant needs to have honesty, good ethics, and social perceptiveness.
  • The applicant should possess a good understanding of confidentiality as related to the business of the Board.



Salary and Benefits:


Starting annual salary is $55,557 - $60K depending on an individual’s qualifications and experience. Benefits include health insurance, state retirement benefits, and earned sick and annual leave.



Limitations:

This position is exempted from unclassified service through November 3, 2024. At the expiration of the exemption, the board may request a continuance of the unclassified position, convert the position to classified service, or terminate the position.
