Academic Advancement Programs (AAP)


Academic Advancement Programs (AAP) prepares underrepresented, low-income and first generation college students to pursue advanced degrees.


AAP works in collaboration with faculty, staff, national, and international partners to provide a range of graduate school preparation programs and services.


Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of initiatives designed to increase their awareness and knowledge of the graduate school application process, graduate school funding, summer research programs, and fellowship opportunities.


The Opportunity :


The Assistant Director - Academic Support Services, housed in the Academic Advancement Programs (AAP) office, will be responsible for developing and implementing program activities for the Research and Mentoring Program, as well as maintain program websites and records of student participation in externally funded research programs.


The person in the position is also required to have extensive knowledge of external fellowships / scholarships and the graduate school application process.


The Assistant Director will have supervisory responsibility for the Academic Coordinator II position, AAP graduate assistant (9186) and program assistants.


Responsibilities :


Plans, develops, and directs proposals and initiatives that support student progress towards graduation.


Maintains program application database and facilitate yearly section process for program participants.


Develops and implements program activities such as workshops, graduate school visits, graduate school preparation academy, classes and program management for on-line graduate school preparation program and Research and Mentoring Program.


Responsible for departmental assessment and assisting with yearly reports.


Recommends policies pertaining to Academic Advancement Programs and its initiatives.


Supports program participants in development and submission of graduate school applications.


Serves as a resource for all program activities and student initiatives.


Assists in ensuring the goals and objectives of the Academic Advancement Programs (AAP) are achieved and communicated to the university community.


Assists in the administration of Academic Advancement Programs' rules, policies and procedures.


Works routinely as a member of a team to achieve departmental, program and grant objectives.


Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications :


Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience with at least 1+ year(s) of leadership experience.


Preferred Qualifications :


Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization.


Manual dexterity in hand and fingers, appropriate vision and ability to speak and be understood by large groups and individual people.


Ability to make effective decisions, to learn and apply complex concepts, and to evaluate and solve problems.
