Position Summary


The Medical Records Coding Specialist reads and reviews documentation provided by physicians and other health care providers to obtain detailed information regarding the patient's disease, injuries, medical history, and diagnostic or interventional procedures. The Coding Specialist assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes using a universally recognized system. The Specialist must ensure correct code selection for compliance with federal regulation and insurance requirements.


Detailed Responsibilities



  • Audit practice management system coding engine results for accurately applied diagnostic and procedural codes for exams of varying complexity including nuclear medicine studies, ultrasound, MRI, CT, x-ray.

  • Research, analyze, and abstract diagnoses and procedural codes from the radiology reports and other available medical records in RIS and PACS systems.

  • Assist with review of billing rejections and coding related claims denials.

  • Comply with performance standards and departmental goals.

  • Inform management of any trends or issues impacting efficiencies or reimbursement.

  • Participates in on-going training for Medicare/HIPAA compliance to augment knowledge of procedures, regulations, and compliance.

  • Maintains HIPAA compliance.

  • Uphold all SMIL policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as deemed necessary.


Qualifications



  • High School Education or General Education Degree (GED) required.

  • RCC, CPC, or CCS coding certification required

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Radiology coding preferred.


Physical Requirements:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to sit and must be able to remain in a stationary position while performing the essential duties of this position. Inside general air-conditioned, nonhazardous environment only with light background noise.
